WebRing / JavaScript -- Trying to do the improbable (impossible) - 08/06/2004
The page at is part of the site 's frameset.

If the visitor selects OCT WebRing (or any of the other webrings) in the combobox, further options appear.

I'm quite sure none of the coding would pass the Checker, but that's really not something I'm bothered about.

And for the most part, the code works exactly as intended, save in one thing.

If one hits the buttons for going forward or backwards, it currently incriments/decreases a variable (actually, one of several) by 1, 2, or 5.

This would be well and good if the webring was organized by ID#.

But instead, the webring is organized randomly.

I'm wondering if there is a way to modify the javascript so it could dynamically adjust the variable according to the organization of the ring at the time the form is submited?

I'm expecting that the limitations of JavaScript along with W3C's security requirements will cause problems? Perhaps I could place some sort of alert in the webring code? But then (A) Sites using HTML could break the code, and (2) I'm not sure how to deal with the parent. issue when the code might be nested in an unpredictable number of frames, or how the SSBN stack might effect the matter.
